Enugu school where pupils got arrested for not doing their assignment gets shut down

Saturday, February 25, 2017
Do you remember Early Dew Montessori Academy? Yes, the school in Enugu State, where pupils were arrested for not doing their assignments, well it has been closed down by the Enugu Stte Government.

Briefing newsmen on the recent development, the State's commissioner for education, Professor Uche Eze, said the school might be permanently shut down, for the pyschological abuse of
the arrested kids, unless the school's management  apologized in writing, to the parent's of the abused kids, the people of Enugu State and the State's Government.

The Commissioner also issued out stern warning to schools in the state, who issue out unethical discipline to kids under their care, to stop or face sanction.

Reacting to the suspension, the school's proprietress, Mrs Ify Okonkwo, said she meant no harm in what she did, as she thought she was discouraging the pupils from being lazy. She also disclosed the stunt was pulled with the support of parents in the whatsapp group she created for the school.

“In my mind, I thought I was doing it to bring the children up in a way that they will be attached to their studies. No child was manhandled neither did they point a gun at any of the children.

I was the person that took the pictures and posted them on Whatsapp, with the caption ‘Some children were arrested today for not doing their homework, for not reading their books, for not behaving well, but they promised to change’.

I didn’t mean any harm; I meant well for the kids. If not, I wouldn’t have made it public – it would have been between me and the teachers" she said.

Lady gives birth to baby in neighbour's car in Nsukka, Enugu State

Wednesday, February 22, 2017
A Nigerian lady is now a proud mum, after giving birth to a baby girl in her neighbour's car.

The new mum's neighbour, Daniel Chukuemeka, who shared the story on Facebook, said he was called on emergency late in the night by the lady's husband, who told him that his wife was in labour.
She was then carried down to his car, as the baby was already pushing herself out. The mother
and daughter was then driven down to Divine Mercy Hospital and Maternity, Orba road, Nsukka, who gave them the medical attention they needed.

Here's what he wrote; \"Last night, my neighbour gave birth to a baby girl, IN MY CAR.
Actually, it happened this morning. 12:58 am. I have never witnessed a thing like that before. I only saw such in Nollywood movies.
I was not fast asleep. But I was hearing the first set of gentle knocks on my door in my dreams. Kpam Kpam Kpam Kpam, Daniel o...repeatedly. Later I would deem whoever was knocking that way as unserious. How could such knocks wake me up? But I have just slept off an hour before then. So I was woken up immediately the knock got louder. I rushed out, hearing the cries for help. She was already in labour---my neighbour. My God! I saw the baby's head pushing itself out of my neighbour's privates. She was fast losing blood, as they kept flowing uncontrollably.

As if that was not enough a strange sight for me, I saw that white, long thing they call umbilical cord. Damn it! That was actually when the baby had completely come out. Chai. Poor child. Crying. We didn't know what to do. I was clueless. Her friend---a young lady---was clueless too. There was no other neighbour available. And it was already 01:05 am. But that my neighbour, ba? She was a strong woman. She kept reassuring her panic-stricken friend to stop shouting, re affirming that she'd be fine. She was even the one that suggested we go to a nearby hospital. Olodo like me, I couldn't even think of any meaningful thing to do. My head was full. But she was strong. We carried her down to my car, carrying the baby alongside, careful not to draw the umbilical cord too apart from her. Chai. Blood. She lost a lot of blood. I gently drove us to a nearby hospital. The staff responded quickly. The cord was cut while she was still in the car. The baby survived. The mother survived too. I went back home later and got them some clothes, and tea, milk, bread and hot water for the mother.
This is what I call miracle. Not turning water into wine. In this part of the world, we say "Thank God" for even things we can do ourselves. So for the first time in my life, I'll do this, because I am overwhelmed:

Thank God for my neighbour's strong resolve in the face of hysteria;
Thank God for the mechanic guy that didn't tell me stories yesterday, but promptly worked on the car's fan belt, making the car available;
Thank God for the staff of Divine Mercy Hospital and Maternity, Orba road, Nsukka, especially the gate man, for their immediate response to our call for help;
And finally, thank God for giving us humans all that we need to survive the pestilence and pains He also created on earth, for surely He created all things. Amen!

I learnt a few things:
1. A pregnant woman shouldn't be left alone. I used to say I'd run out of home when my wife gets heavy, to avoid a pregnant woman's wahala. Dear future wife, I have changed my mind. I now understand what you women go through. I'll be there, through it all. No business trips. No conferences or seminar. In fact no work for me. I'll be there. We will do it together. After all, we had sex together (whatever that means).
2. I think one should always have fuel in one's car. Anything can happen any time. And no petrol station might be available at that time.
3. Do not overlook the importance of neighbourliness. And if your neighbour is one who hardly responds to knocks on his/her door (like my former useless neighbour), declare such a neighbour as useless to humanity.
Finally, women, please accept the assurances of my ernest respect for your natural abilities. Truly, there's more to your privates than just sexual activity.
PS: the head nurse said I'd make a good father, because of the way I was in charge. Is that true? I mean, why not?"

JUST IN: Appeal Court Decline To Sack Enugu State Gov Ugwuanyi

Thursday, February 16, 2017
COURT of Appeal in Abuja yesterday declined to sack Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu State from office over allegation that he was illegally nominated by the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to contest the April 11, 2015, governorship election.

In a unanimous judgment, threeman panel of Justices of the Appellate Court led by Justice Tinuade Akomolafe-Wilson, struck out the appeal marked CA/A/157/2015, which was lodged by a chieftain of the PDP in the state, Senator Anyogu Eze. Eze had prayed the appellate court to remove Ugwuanyi from office on the premise that he was not validly nominated by PDP for the gubernatorial election. He told the court that Ugwuanyi emerged from a kangaroo primary election which he said was conducted on December 8, by some leaders of PDP.

The appellant, through his lead counsel, Mr. Adebayo Adelodun, (SAN), insisted that Ugwuanyi was merely handpicked by some persons at the national headquarters of the party in Abuja, alleging that the purported primary election was organised with fake list of delegates. He argued that the primary poll that produced Ugwuanyi was in breach of section 87(4)(b)(I) of the Electoral Act. Eze who is laying claim to the PDP governorship ticket in Enugu State having merged through a parallel primary election, prayed the court to set aside the judgment of Justice Evoh Chukwu of the Federal High Court in Abuja which dismissed his suit on March 2, 2015.

He urged the court to not only okay the parallel primary election that produced him, but to also declare him as the authentic governorship candidate of the party in Enugu State. However, Governor Ugwuanyi, through his lead counsel, Chief Wole Olanipekun, (SAN), prayed the appellate court to dismiss the preelection case which he said was bereft of merit. Ugwuanyi equally filed an appeal marked CA/A/157b/2015, wherein he challenged validity of the parallel primary election that produced Eze. He argued that Eze lacked the locus standi to query his ticket since he did not participate in the primary conducted by the National Working Committee of PDP. He told the appellate court that Eze walked out on the committee and refused to participate in the primary.

Ugwuanyi further exhibited result of the primary he said was sanctioned by national leadership of the party. The document contained names of all the governorship aspirants, including Eze. His lawyer, Olanipekun, explained to the court that though the document contained Eze’s name, he said no result was credited to him considering that he boycotted the process alongside another aspirant, Dr. Samuel Maduka Onyishi, who is the owner of Peace Mass Transit Limited. In its judgment, the appellate court held that under section 87 of the Electoral Act, Eze, lacked the locus standi to challenge Ugwuanyi’s nomination having admitted that he did not participate in the primary that was conducted by the King Asara Asara led electoral panel of the PDP. It stressed that the trial high court ought to have dismissed the case for want of jurisdiction. “This appeal lacks merit and it is hereby dismissed. There is no order as to cost. The decision of the trial court is hereby upheld. However, in view of the fact that the trial court lacked the jurisdiction to entertain the case in the first place, the appeal is therefore accordingly struck out,” the court held.
